Two Guitars at a Balkan Banquet

Accompanied by family members, Flory Jagoda paints a vibrant picture of daily life in pre-WWII Sarajevo, interweaving Balkan, Turkish and Greek essence with the musical matrix of 15th century Spain -- the foundation of Sephardic music. Guitarist Tim Sparks, joined by bassist Greg Cohen and Brazilian percussionist Cyro Baptista, combines his signature fingerstyle ragtime sensibility with genre-bending improvisations, classical music structures and flamenco voicings found in traditional Jewish songs of Southeastern Europe, touching on Sephardic, Ashkenazi and Mizrahi influences.

As a member of the "second generation", she reflects on the struggle between her need to recognize the effect of the Holocaust on her life and her parents' efforts to establish a happy family life. Comedian Harmonists: Six Life Stories

Eberhard Fechner's socumentary tells the story of Germany's legendary vocal sextet undone by Nazi bigotry. Fechner interviewed four surviving members, interweaving their stories with the group's triumphant rise and tragic demise, underscored by their mellifluous tones and easy-listening repertory of Brahms to blues. Branded "degenerate" because three of its members were Jewish, the group was forced to disband at the height of a Beatles-like popularity. Both groups reformed-one was eventually banned in Germany, the other flourished for some years in exile. Germany, 1976, Parts I, II: 96 minutes each, German with English subtitles.

Films by Abraham Ravett

Abraham Ravett's powerfully personal films about his relationship with his parents--both Holocaust survivors--raise issues of memory and loss in a specifically cinematic way. Fashioned from a series of interviews with his mother, "The March" 25mins., evokes her recollections of the death march out of Auschwitz. The filmmaker will be present to discuss this and other works, including "Half Sister" and "In Memory"
