My Terrorist

$8/$4. By Yulie Cohen Gerstel, 2002 (58Â’)Israel: Ideal and Reality Series. Yulie Gerstel was wounded in a 1978 terrorist attack. Twenty-three years later, she begins to question the causes of violence in the Middle East and considers helping to release her attacker. The shock of 9/11, and the war on terrorism casts doubts over her one-woman human rights campaign to facilitate reconciliation between the Palestinians and Israelis. This provocative film is a testimony to human compassion, and a call for peace. Preceded by: Zoo Story. Abdullah, a young Palestinian, has been working at the Bible Lands Zoo for five years and is now a caretaker there. The film explores the difficulties he and his Israeli friends have had to overcome to get to know each other. Israel, 2000, (12Â’). (I Am/You Are Project). Speaker: Charles B. "Asesino"

$8/$4 for students and seniors. By Nurit Kedar, 2002, (59’)Lens on Latin America. The story of the Jewish "disappeared" under Argentina's former military junta in the 1970s is tragic and sinister; of the 30,000 people who disappeared, 3,000 were Jews. The film looks at the tragedy of loss and how Israel’s relationship with Argentina may have kept it from playing a greater part in interceding on behalf of the country's Jewish population. Preceded by: Memories of Argentina's Dirty WarStories of death, disappearance and the dissolution of a society during the 1973-1982 junta. Director: J. Knoop and S. Muñoz, U.S.A., 1998, (14’). "The Jewish Catalog: 30th Anniversary"

$10.00. Curated by Daniel Asa Rose. Informally referred to as the "Whole Earth Catalog of Judaism”, what made it different from all other Jewish reference books of its time was that, in addition to covering the background and theory of all aspects of ritual life, it covered the practical side as well. The “Jewish Catalog”, in its light-hearted scholarship, as well as in its straightforwardly joyous approach, was nothing short of revolutionary. Participants include Catalog writers: Richard Siegel, Executive Director, National Foundation for Jewish Culture, Sharon Strassfeld, and Rabbi Michael Strassfeld, Society for the Advancement of Judaism. Moderator: Ellen Frankel, Director, Jewish Publication Society.

"Integrated and Distinct: Images of the Jews from Greece 1880-1930"

A fascinating journey through the history and traditions of the bimillenarian Jewish communities of Greece: the Greek-speaking ancient Romaniotes and the Ladino-speaking Sephardim, who settled in Greece after the expulsion from Spain. Daily and religious life at the turn of the 19th century and the massive emigration to the New World in the 1920's-30's are delicately explored through photographs, clothing, kitchenware and other familial mementos. Sponsored by the American Sephardi Federation/Sephardic House. More Than A Life

Richard Sonnenfeldt, chief interpreter and youngest member of the American prosecution team at the Nuremberg War Crimes Trial, has just completed an extraordinary memoir. Beginning with his escape from Nazi Germany at age 15 to his schooling in England, his deportation to Australia, and his arrival in New York via Bombay, South Africa, and Cuba, this is an amazing story. Mr. Sonnenfeldt spoke to all defendants and most key witnesses in the Nuremburg Trials. As chief of the interpretation section, he had conversations with everyone from Hermann Goering to Hitler's secretary. Returning to America after the war, Mr. Sonnenfeldt studied electric engineering at John Hopkins University. He became a principal developer of color television, computer and space electronics, and received 35 U.S. patents.

"Traders on the Sea Routes: 12th Century Trade Between East and West"

Experience a taste of medieval Cairo, the hub of trade between Europe and Asia from 1100-1200 CE. Two exquisitely crafted model sailing vessels-an Arab dhow and a Venetian galley--will travel along wall maps illustrating the trade routes of medieval merchants to Cairo via the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian Ocean. Activity stations take us to a bazaar where gems, spices and textiles are traded, to the Genizah of the ancient Ben Ezra synagogue, a place for storing written materials and ritual objects that can no longer be used; and Maimonides' Study, where visitors will learn about the great rabbi, scholar, physician and philosopher who lived in Cairo and was leader of world Jewry. L'Affaire Dreyfus (The Dreyfus Affair)

$7/3.50 for students and seniors. A striking and provocative production! The travesty of justice by Dreyfus is set against the tenor of the times, and includes historical figures of both Jewish and French society. The French military establisment, infected with anti-Semitism, is willing to sacrifice moral and ethical standards and an innocent Jew to protect its reputation. In juxtaposition are the heroic figures in Dreyfus's family, and supporters in the intellectual world who struggle for the truth and vindication. Izydi? (Get Thee Out!)

$7/$3.50 for Students and Seniors Sponsored by Yeshiva University Museum and YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. Based on the stories of Sholem Aleichem and those of Isaac Babel, this textured film takes place at a time when political and popular anti-Semitism was endemic. At the same time, there is a familiarity and accommodation between Jewish and Christian neighbors. Comical, bawdy and humane, the story declares ethnic pride and tolerance when faced with pogroms and expulsion. Director: Dmitry Astrakhan, Russia, 1991, 90 mins., Russian with English subtitles. "Jews in Berlin"

Free. The editors of "Jews in Berlin" are three of the leading Jewish voices in Germany today. As they plainly state in the preface to this volume, today's official Jewish Community is neither in the tradition of nor in continuity with the Jewish Community as it existed in 1938. Today, even with 100,000 Jews, little remains of the Berlin that was a European/Jewish cultural metropolis where Jews were an integral part of the society. Will they ever again be integrated into the life of the city? The answer, according to the editors, is delicate and complex. Their perspective is especially relevant as it is informed by the optimism of survivors as well as by the burden of personal history.

$7.00/$3.50 for Students and Seniors Sponsored by YIVO Institute For Jewish Research. Initially banned from French TV, because it revealed shocking truths about the French collaboration with the Nazis, this documentary chronicles the role played by the Eastern European Jewish refugees in the Resistance in Paris. As desparate young men with little to lose, they carried out the most dangerous assignments, assassinating Nazis on the metro, or in broad daylight in the street. The filmmaker reveals, however, that there is considerable evidence that many of them were betrayed to the Nazis by their French comrades. Narrated by Simone Signoret.
